Grupa genetički nasleđenih oblika anemije prouzrokovane proizvodnjom krhkih molekula hemoglobina koje su podložne uništavanju. Thalassemia se najprisutnija na Mediteranu i u Jugoistočnoj Aziji. Kao i kod srpastih ćelija i nedostatka glukoza 6-fosfat dehidrogenaze, moguća je izvezna otpornost na malariju.
