Prema Bartu, nivoi signifikacije nazvani denotacija i konotacija se kombinuju da bi se proizvela ideologija u formi mita - što se naziva trećim nivoom signifikacije. U popularnoj upotrebi termin "mit" se odnosi na verovanja koja su očigledno lažna, ali ovo ne mora da bude slučaj u njegovoj semiotičkoj upotrebi.
