Metafora izražava manje poznat termin kroz neki koji je više poznat. Ova dva termina nisu u direktnoj vezi i moramo da upotrebimo maštu da bismo uočili sličnost na koju metafora aludira. U semiotičkom smislu, metafora podrazumeva da jedno označeno funkcioniše kao označitelj za nešto potpuno drugo označeno. Metafore na prvi pogled deluju nekonvencionalne jer očigledno zanemaruju bukvalnu ili denotativnu sličnost.
